¿Quién no conoce a Marc? Marc Jacobs nació el 9 de Abril de 1963 en Nueva York. Desde pequeño quiso dedicarse al mundo de la moda, y cuando tuvo la edad suficiente se inscribió en la High School Art and Design of New York. Después de graduarse quiso perfeccionar sus estudios en Parson´s School of Design, una prestigiosa escuela de diseño de Nueva York. En su ultimo año fue galardonado con tres de los mas altos honores de la escuela (The Design Student of the Year, el Perry Ellis Gold Dedal y el Chester Weimberg Gold Dedal), gracias a su colección de Op-Art Sweasters tejidos por su abuela. En su programa de post-grado, los sweaters llamaron mucho la atención; incluyendo la de Barbara Weiser propietaria de Charivari New York Boutique, que le hizo un pedido para que fuesen profesionalmente producidos y vendidos en su tienda bajo la marca Marc & Barbara by Marc Jacobs. También llamó la atención de Robert Duffy, el entonces ejecutivo de Reuben Thomas Duffy Inc. que alistó a Marc para el diseño de la etiqueta subsidiaria de la compañía,Sketchbook.

El diseñó dos colecciones de Sketchbook, las cuales cosecharon muchos elogios de los críticos, antes de que Reuben Thomas Inc. saliese del negocio en 1985. La primera colección del diseñador salió en 1986, gracias al apoyo de Kashiyama USA Inc.. En 1987, Marc se convirtió en el diseñador mas joven jamas galardonado con el premio Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent del Consejo Americano de Diseñdores de Moda (CFDA).

En 1989, Robert Duffy y Marc Jacobs se unieron a la compañía Ellis para ocuparse de su linea femenina. En ese momento, Marc empleo al hasta entonces desconocido Tom Ford. Marc perdió el cargo en 1992, tras crear una colección de inspiración Grunge que suscitó una gran polémica. Curiosamente, ese mismo año fue premiado con el mas prestigioso galardón del CFDA; el Women’s Designer of the Year Award.

En 1994, Marc presentó su primera colección ready-to-wear en Nueva York creando un gran revuelo cuando modelos de la talla de Naomi Campbell o Linda Evangelista no cobraron nada por desfilar en apoyo al diseñador. La colección en si tuvo una gran acogida. Su primera colección masculina la presento en 1995. En 1997, fue nombrado director creativo de la casa Louis Vuitton en la cual ha impulsado la transgresión de la marca y su adaptación a las nuevas tendencias del mercado. En ese mismo año creo la primera colección Prêt-à-porter de la marca. Al mismo tiempo compro una participacion para poder tener libertad financiera y expandir su propio negocio. En la primavera de 2001, Marc presento la segunda linea de la que es su marca, Marc By Marc Jacobs con precios más asequibles que su primera marca. Dentro de los diez primeros años de su nombramiento como Director Creativo, Marc a través de colaboraciones con diferentes marcas comenzó a crear piezas de culto altamente codiciadas. A partir de 2011, el CFDA había coronado a Marc como Diseñador de Moda del Año en tres ocasiones, Diseñador de Accesorios del Año en cuatro y Diseñador de Moda Masculina de Año una vez. En 2012 ha cumplido 15 años como Director Creativo de Louis Vuitton. En estos momentos y desde el mes de Marzo podemos visitar su exposición en Les Arts Décoratifs en París, que finalizará en el mes de Septiembre.
